The A ,B,C of Self Defence

I offer a structured approach to get students thinking about their personal safety. One way to think of applying personal safety in your daily life is to think in terms of the above triangle in a series of layers. The LAST RESORT in personal safety is the use of physical methods.By creating habits and practice relevant to each layer will help increase ones overall personal safety. Please click on a section of the triangle for more information.
Basic Daily Safety Habits
These are actions we take each day to make ourselves safer. Some examples:-
- if you cover up your valuables such as mobile phones or jewellery you are reducing the opportunity for a thief to steal them.
- Whenever possible dont walk alone.
- Carry a personal attack alarm
- Locking doors
- Adopting Positive body language.

Awareness and Positive Avoidance
Being alert and aware of your immediate environment is extremely important. If your walking down the street with your mp3 plugged into your ears, you will be less aware AND MAY NOT NOTICE A CAR OR PERSON APPROACHING YOU.Take positive actions to avoid suspect situations:-
- Dont take a short cut through a dark area.
- If a car stops and asks directions -keep you distance
- If you think your being followed go to the nearest place with people and call the police
- If you feel uncomfortable about a situation-trust your instincts and do something!

Verbal Strategies of Self Defence and Personal Safety
The voice is a powerful self defence and personal safety weopon. It can be used to distract, negotiate and shout. Methods can be employed to be "assertive" rather than aggressive to help diffuse a situation before it escalates into a physical one.
Physical Self Defence

Physical methods of self defence need to be simple and effective relying on speed and surprise rather than strength.Self defence is NOT a martial art* but many of the moves i teach are derived from my study of karate with elements taken from other martial arts.I teach some simple methods to help deal with Punches,Kicks,Clothes Grabs,Strangles/Chokes.By adopting a personal safety strategy its hoped a physical confrontation will never apply but equipping yourself with some practical knowledge helps give you a choice should such a situation happen.
